Synopsis
Dark Water (仄暗い水の底から, 2002) is Hideo Nakata's Japanese horror you can watch online on iFILM. In the middle of a bitter divorce, a young mother moves into a run-down apartment block with her five-year-old daughter, where dark water keeps seeping through the ceiling.
The stain overhead spreads. The elevator rides up to the top floor on its own. And a child's red bag turns up in the flat, the same bag that belonged to a little girl who vanished in this building two years ago. Yoshimi fights to shield Ikuko from whatever is in the walls while battling to keep custody of her in court. The dread comes not from jump scares but from damp, leaks, and the slow unraveling of an exhausted woman alone.
Nakata, the director of Ringu, helped define modern J-horror, and Dark Water comes from a story by the same author, Koji Suzuki. Hollywood later remade it with Jennifer Connelly, yet the original is bleaker and sadder, closer to a tale of a mother's sacrifice than a ghost story. Anyone who prefers slow, atmospheric fear over gore will find a lot to love. Stream Dark Water (2002) online on iFILM.
