Synopsis

Women Talking (2022) is Sarah Polley's drama, available to watch online on iFILM. For years the women of a sealed-off religious colony woke up bruised and were told demons or their own imaginations were to blame. The truth was far uglier: the men of the community were the attackers.

With the accused men hauled off to town, the women gather in a hayloft and have two days to settle on one of three paths — stay silent, stay and fight, or leave for good. The argument never turns to shouting; it stays low and searching, weighing faith, forgiveness, the right to anger and the kind of world their children will inherit. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy and Jessie Buckley voice competing sides of a single choice, while Ben Whishaw plays the one man trusted to keep the minutes.

Polley adapted Miriam Toews' novel, drawn from real events in a Bolivian Mennonite colony, and took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The muted, almost color-drained images make the conversation cut even deeper. A demanding watch for anyone ready for a hard but necessary one. Stream Women Talking online on iFILM.
