Synopsis
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), John Madden's wartime romance, is available to watch online on iFILM. Adapted from Louis de Bernières' novel, it follows a love story on a Greek island that a foreign army turns upside down.
Pelagia, a village doctor's daughter, is set to marry the fisherman Mandras until he leaves for the front. An Italian garrison lands on the island, and among the officers is Antonio Corelli, who carries a mandolin instead of a rulebook and sings opera with his men. The standoff between locals and occupiers slowly thaws, and something forbidden grows between Pelagia and the captain. Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, John Hurt and Christian Bale lead the cast.
The drama leans on a real backdrop: in September 1943 the Italians on Kefalonia were trapped between the Germans and a brutal choice, and the idyll tips into tragedy. Filmed on the island itself, with the music doing as much work as any character. One for viewers who still love a sweeping, old-fashioned romance with history underneath.
