Synopsis
Underground (1995) is Emir Kusturica's tragicomic war epic, available to watch online on iFILM. Two Belgrade hustlers run a hidden weapons workshop, and one of them stays buried underground for two decades after the fighting has long stopped.
Marko and Blacky sell guns to the Communist resistance in German-occupied Belgrade while living loud enough to shake the rafters. Once peace arrives, the cunning Marko climbs the Party ranks above ground, steals his friend's girl, the actress Natalija, and leaves Blacky with a whole cellar commune below, convinced the war still rages outside. For years they forge rifles for a conflict that ended, until the lie finally bursts open during the real Yugoslav collapse of the 1990s.
It all unfolds to Goran Bregovic's restless brass: weddings, brawls and funerals ride the same musical wave. The film earned Kusturica his second Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1995. This near-three-hour canvas is really about a country sealed inside the basement of its own history, made for viewers ready for Balkan chaos where laughter and grief never separate.
