Synopsis

Toys (1992) is Barry Levinson's oddball fantasy comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Robin Williams stars as Leslie Zevo, an overgrown kid who lives for his father's toy factory and its windup ducks and fake vomit.

When the old man dies, he leaves the company not to his son but to his brother Leland, a retired army general. The general knows nothing about whimsy and everything about orders. He seals himself in an office, puts the plant under guard and quietly retools it to build combat drones dressed up as toys — weapons that children will pilot like a video game, never realizing the targets are real. To stop him, Leslie teams with his sister Alsatia and a wide-eyed new hire and stages a teddy-bear rebellion against his uncle's iron rule.

Critics savaged the plot, but the film keeps finding fans for a different reason: production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti built a surreal storybook world of rolling green hills and pop-art interiors that looks lifted from a Magritte painting, earning Oscar nominations for its art direction and costumes. It is a strange, coolly beautiful picture, with an early bit part for Jamie Foxx and a Tori Amos song on the soundtrack. Stream Toys (1992) online on iFILM.
