Sphere

Sphere (1998) is a sci-fi thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Barry Levinson. Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson play scientists sent roughly a thousand feet below the Pacific to examine a spacecraft that has been sitting there for three centuries.

The ship is American in design — which should be impossible, since nothing like it was ever built. Inside the cargo hold they find a perfect gold sphere, seamless and enormous. No door. No seam. People who enter it come back changed. Then the underwater habitat starts flooding, and something out in the water seems to know what each of them fears most.

The film is based on Michael Crichton's 1987 novel — the author better known for Jurassic Park. Crichton built his stories on the premise that the scariest thing about the unknown is what it does to the people examining it, and that tension transfers intact to the deep-sea setting.
