About

Synopsis

The Aftermath (2019) is James Kent's wartime romantic drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The winter of 1946, a flattened Hamburg still smoldering, and British colonel Lewis Morgan moves his wife Rachel into a grand requisitioned house.

Keira Knightley plays a woman whose grief over a lost son has hardened into ice. The catch: the home's owner, a German widower and architect named Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgard), is allowed to stay on under the same roof with his teenage daughter. Lewis (Jason Clarke) buries himself in rebuilding the ruined city and fails to notice the dangerous pull forming between his wife and a man he was lately at war with. Beyond the walls there are curfews, raids, and die-hard Nazi holdouts.

Adapted from Rhidian Brook's novel, the film plays an old story of forbidden attraction against rubble and shared guilt. Costumes, snowbound interiors and three strong leads carry it where the script turns predictable. It suits anyone who likes restrained postwar dramas in the British period-piece mold.
