An Officer and a Gentleman

Off the base, Zack falls for Paula, a local factory girl hoping to leave town on the arm of a cadet. Debra Winger plays a woman for whom this isn't a scheme but a gamble. And Zack has to figure out whether he can give of himself instead of only taking.

Director Taylor Hackford made a coming-of-age story that became an 80s touchstone. Gossett Jr. won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and the song "Up Where We Belong" won for Best Original Song.
