Lucky

That small stumble cracks open a quiet reckoning — conversations with the bartender, his insurance man, and a neighbor mourning a runaway tortoise named President Roosevelt. Among the local oddballs is David Lynch himself, playing Lucky's friend.

This was Harry Dean Stanton's final leading role; he died not long after the premiere, turning the film into an 88-minute farewell. Character actor John Carroll Lynch made his directing debut here, and it's dry and gentle, with no sentimentality, about facing the end without fear and without God.
