Synopsis
Umberto D. (1952), directed by Vittorio De Sica, is an Italian drama you can watch online on iFILM. An old man in Rome is left with a tiny pension, unpaid rent, and a single companion who still cares about him: his mongrel dog Flike.
Umberto Domenico Ferrari spent thirty years as a civil servant and now cannot scrape together what his landlady demands. Too proud to beg openly, he tries everything else first, faking illness to reach a hospital bed and scrambling to find someone to look after the dog. The role went not to an actor but to a university professor, Carlo Battisti, whose worn-out dignity carries the film better than any star could. The only person who shows him kindness is Maria, the landlady's young pregnant maid.
This is Italian neorealism at its purest: nonprofessional actors, the real streets of Rome, and an ending with no comfort attached. Screenwriter Cesare Zavattini pushed the method to its limit, letting whole stretches of screen time rest on small everyday gestures. De Sica considered it his finest work and dedicated it to his father. Quiet, unsparing and deeply humane. Stream Umberto D. (1952) online on iFILM.
