Batman: Gotham by Gaslight

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018) is an animated action-thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It drops the Dark Knight into a late-1800s Gotham of gaslamps, steam engines and top hats, where a caped figure has only just begun his war on crime.

A string of brutal killings spreads through the Victorian city. The wounds, the staging, the pattern, everything points to Jack the Ripper, who has crossed the ocean from Whitechapel. Bruce Wayne, not yet a legend but a wealthy eccentric, sets out to unmask the killer before the police can. Opera singer Selina Kyle moves through the same shadows with her own reasons to want him caught. Suspicion lands on one man, then another, before the reveal lands hard.

The film grows out of the cult 1989 graphic novel by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, the very first Elseworlds tale to yank a familiar hero into another century. Bruce Greenwood and Jennifer Carpenter lead the voice cast under director Sam Liu. The steampunk setting and whodunit structure make this one for Batman fans tired of the usual formula.
