Synopsis
From Hell (2001) is a grim historical thriller directed by Albert and Allen Hughes — watch it online on iFILM. Johnny Depp plays Frederick Abberline, a Scotland Yard inspector who doses on opium to sharpen his visions and hunts Jack the Ripper through the fog-soaked alleys of 1888 Whitechapel.
The victims share a history. Abberline clocks the surgical precision of each murder and starts pulling on a thread that leads somewhere far worse than a lone madman. Heather Graham plays Mary Kelly, the woman he risks everything to protect. Ian Holm and Robbie Coltrane round out a cast that keeps secrets buried deep. The deeper Abberline digs, the higher up the conspiracy runs — into Freemasonry and the British Crown itself.
The film adapts Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's landmark graphic novel, which reframed the Ripper case as a political horror story. Cinematographer Peter Deming shot Whitechapel in sickly greens that feel closer to a fever dream than period drama.
