The premise: an ancient alien device known as the Stargate punches wormholes across the Milky Way, connecting thousands of worlds in seconds. The U.S. Air Force's SG-1 team uses it to explore, trade, and fight. Colonel Jack O'Neill, played by Richard Dean Anderson, leads the unit through eight seasons alongside physicist Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), archaeologist Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), and Jaffa warrior Teal'c (Christopher Judge). The enemies escalate season by season — from the parasitic Goa'uld to self-replicating machines to the quasi-divine Ori.

When Ben Browder and Claudia Black joined in season nine, the show refreshed without losing its tone.
