About

Synopsis

The Passion of the Christ (2004) is a religious drama directed by Mel Gibson that you can watch online on iFILM. The film covers roughly twelve hours — from the arrest in the garden at night through to the crucifixion on Calvary. Jim Caviezel plays Jesus, and every line of dialogue is delivered in Aramaic, Latin, or Hebrew. No concessions to modern audiences.

Gibson made a deliberate choice not to look away. The scourging, the weight of the cross, the nails — the camera stays close throughout. Maia Morgenstern plays Mary as a mother who can only witness. Monica Bellucci is Mary Magdalene. Hristo Shopov plays Pontius Pilate as a pragmatic official who has already lost control of events. Mel Gibson's production company Icon Productions self-financed and released the film independently; made for $30 million, it earned over $610 million worldwide — one of the highest-grossing independent productions ever made.

Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel shot on film with a muted, almost fresco-like palette. The sets and costumes were built from period scholarship and early Christian art. The film provoked immediate debate among theologians, historians, and religious communities when it opened in February 2004. Watch The Passion of the Christ (2004) online on iFILM.
