Synopsis
The Grandmaster (一代宗師, 2013) is Wong Kar-wai's historical drama about Wing Chun master Ip Man, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi lead the cast, with fight choreography from the legendary Yuen Woo-ping.
Foshan, the 1930s. Ip Man is a calm, well-off man whose skill draws the eye of Gong Yutian, a master from the north looking for an heir. After a demonstration bout, Gong's daughter, Gong Er, challenges Ip to reclaim her family's honor. A quiet attraction grows between them, the kind that never gets its chance. Then the war with Japan tears everything apart: Ip flees to Hong Kong and fights to keep his family fed, while Gong Er gives her life over to avenging her murdered father.
Wong spent the better part of a decade on this, and it shows — rain, smoke, slowed-down strikes, glances that carry more than dialogue. Less a straight biopic of the man who would train Bruce Lee, more a mournful poem about lost time. For viewers who want beauty from their martial arts, not just combat. Stream The Grandmaster (2013) online on iFILM.
