Synopsis

Chungking Express (1994) is a Hong Kong romantic drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Wong Kar-wai and starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Faye Wong. Two lonely cops, two separate love stories, one city that never slows down.

Cop 223 spends his nights buying cans of pineapple that expire on May 1st — if everything has an expiration date, maybe heartbreak does too. He stumbles into a bar and meets a woman in a blonde wig who moves contraband and never stays anywhere long. Cop 663 eats at the same late-night snack bar every evening, completely unaware that the counter girl Faye has been sneaking into his apartment, rearranging his furniture, blasting The Mamas & The Papas, and quietly planning to take his California dream for herself.

Wong Kar-wai shot the film in under two months — mostly without a script, on the streets of 1993 Hong Kong, while editing another feature in parallel. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle's handheld work and the restless editing gave the film its signature texture: a mood piece disguised as a comedy of missed connections. Stream Chungking Express online on iFILM and catch one of the defining works of Hong Kong New Wave cinema.
