Synopsis
Birth of the Dragon (2017) is a martial arts drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Nolfi. It reconstructs one of the most debated private fights in martial arts history: the closed-door match between a young Bruce Lee and kung fu master Wong Jack Man, held in San Francisco's Chinatown around 1964.
Philip Ng plays Bruce Lee at a turning point — ambitious, skilled, and running his own school where he teaches kung fu to anyone who shows up, including non-Chinese students. That last part is the problem. Yu Xia's Wong Jack Man arrives from Shanghai carrying a more traditional view of who the art belongs to, and the two men agree to settle the question privately. If Bruce loses, he closes the school. Billy Magnussen plays Steve McKee, an American student pulled into the conflict, whose outsider perspective frames both fighters and the divided community around them.
