Synopsis

Hour of the Wolf (Vargtimmen, 1968) is Ingmar Bergman's only horror film, and you can watch online on iFILM. The title names that stretch between night and dawn — when, as the film says, most people die and nightmares feel most real.

Painter Johan Borg (Max von Sydow) and his pregnant wife Alma (Liv Ullmann) are living on a bare island. Johan barely sleeps; he sketches the monsters from his dreams and fills a diary with apparitions. A group of aristocrats from a nearby castle invites the couple over, and the dinner curdles into something no one can quite call real. The wall between Johan's private demons and the world around him thins until it nearly disappears.

Sven Nykvist shot it in stark black and white, and that light carries the whole oppressive mood. This is Bergman at his strangest — intimate, unnerving, closer to a waking nightmare than to his usual chamber dramas. For viewers ready to sit with a film that refuses clean answers.
