Synopsis
Watch mother! (2017) online on iFILM, Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror that splits every room it plays in. A young wife (Jennifer Lawrence) rebuilds her husband's fire-gutted house by hand. He (Javier Bardem) is a poet who hasn't written a line in ages. Then someone knocks.
The man at the door (Ed Harris) is a stranger, yet the husband insists he stay. Soon the visitor's wife arrives too (Michelle Pfeiffer), prying and sharp-tongued, then grown sons, then crowds of people no one invited. Lawrence's character drifts through a house that seems to breathe and bleed while her husband soaks up the attention and ignores her alarm. The camera stays locked on her face for nearly all 115 minutes, and the dread tightens frame by frame.
Aronofsky isn't telling a story so much as building a parable, a family nightmare wrapped around an allegory people still argue over. It was booed in Venice and hailed as a decade's best in the same week. No spoilers, just this: the final act rewrites everything the first hour told you. Stream mother! online on iFILM.
