Stage actress Elisabeth Vogler (Liv Ullmann) stops talking in the middle of a performance. The doctors find nothing physically wrong. Nurse Alma (Bibi Andersson) is assigned to care for her at a remote house by the sea. Alma fills every silence with words — her fears, her secrets, a confession she's never made before. Elisabeth listens but never answers. Slowly, the line between the two women starts to dissolve.

Bergman shot Persona during a period of personal collapse, and cinematographer Sven Nykvist gave it a raw, almost clinical light. The film refuses explanation.
