Synopsis

Brief Encounter (1945) is David Lean's romance, free to watch online on iFILM. A married suburban housewife, Laura, meets a doctor named Alec by chance at a railway station when he removes a speck of grit from her eye. From that small kindness grows an attachment neither of them goes looking for.

They start meeting on Thursdays, in the station refreshment room and at matinee screenings, both painfully aware there can be no future in it. Laura has a husband and children waiting at home; Alec has a family of his own. Celia Johnson carries the picture through a hushed inner monologue as trains rush past the platform, and Trevor Howard plays the man whose conscience keeps undercutting his heart.

Lean adapted it from Noël Coward's play and scored it to the rush of steam, rain on glass, and Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. The English restraint here works like a lid clamped over a boil: nothing showy on the surface, everything churning beneath. It is the film that explains why people sometimes confess love in a whisper. Stream Brief Encounter (1945) online on iFILM.
