Synopsis

Oliver Twist (1948) is David Lean's landmark British drama — watch it online on iFILM. The film adapts Charles Dickens' novel with John Howard Davies as the young orphan and Alec Guinness delivering a career-defining turn as Fagin, the cunning criminal mastermind.

Nine-year-old Oliver escapes a parish workhouse where starvation passed for discipline, only to land on London's streets and straight into Fagin's pickpocket crew. Robert Newton plays Bill Sikes — brutish, unpredictable, dangerous — and Kay Walsh rounds out the underworld as Nancy, torn between loyalty and conscience. When a kind stranger named Mr. Brownlow offers Oliver a way out, the criminal network closes in to drag him back.

Lean shot this picture immediately after Great Expectations, completing a remarkable back-to-back run of Dickens adaptations. Cinematographer Guy Green built a Victorian London from shadow and fog that owes more to noir than costume drama. At 110 minutes, the film moves fast for a 1948 production, and Guinness' performance remains a masterclass in unsettling character work. Stream Oliver Twist (1948) online on iFILM.
