Charlie is a New York theater director, Nicole the lead actress in his company, and their young son grows up backstage. Charlie thought things were fine. Nicole realized she had stopped being herself years ago, took the boy, and moved home to Los Angeles, where a television role is waiting. What follows is the thing neither of them wanted: lawyers, coast-to-coast flights, and a fight over custody. Laura Dern plays the relentless divorce attorney, with Alan Alda and Ray Liotta as two very different kinds of legal muscle.
Baumbach wrote the screenplay drawing on his own divorce, which is why the apartment shouting match lands so hard. The film picked up six Academy Award nominations and won Laura Dern an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. A quiet, honest, surprisingly funny film about love that doesn't save anyone.
