Synopsis

Leviathan (1989) is George P. Cosmatos' deep-sea creature feature you can watch online on iFILM. Three miles down in the Atlantic, a crew drilling for ore stumbles onto the wreck of a sunken Soviet ship and hauls a sealed safe back to their station.

Inside is a logbook describing the sickness that wiped out the Russian crew. Then one of the miners dies, starts to change, and becomes something that fuses with the bodies it kills and hunts whoever is left. Peter Weller runs the station as Beck, with Richard Crenna as the rig doctor and Ernie Hudson rounding out the crew. The surface is too far, the rescue sub won't make it, and the thing learns faster than any of them.

The film belongs to that brief turn-of-the-decade run of underwater horror alongside The Abyss and DeepStar Six. Stan Winston designed the monster, and its wet, ever-shifting form still holds up better than a lot of CGI. This is genre meat and potatoes, built for fans of a sealed room and rising dread.
