The Essex left Nantucket chasing sperm whales across the Pacific and spent eighteen months at sea. Then something no crew expected: a massive whale, closer to eighty feet, circles and rams the hull — twice. Twenty men abandon the stricken ship and drift for more than ninety days across open water with almost no food or fresh water. Ben Whishaw plays a young Melville who tracks down the last surviving crewman decades later, pressing for a version of events the old sailor has never wanted to speak aloud.
