Synopsis
First They Killed My Father (2017) is Angelina Jolie's historical war drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In mid-1970s Cambodia, a five-year-old girl from a city family loses her home, her name and her childhood when a regime that treats the past as an enemy seizes the country.
The story unfolds entirely through the eyes of Loung Ung, the writer whose memoir became the screenplay. Her family is first marched out of Phnom Penh, then scattered across labor camps where children are handed rifles and hunger kills faster than soldiers do. Jolie explains almost nothing in words. We only see what a child could see: faces, mud, sky, and long lines of people walking toward nowhere.
Shot in the Khmer language with a Cambodian cast, the film was made with Rithy Panh, a survivor of those very years. It refuses spectacle, choosing a quiet record of loss where restraint is the whole point. For anyone ready for hard but honest cinema about the cost of an ideology, this is worth your time.
