Synopsis

A Hidden Life (2019) is Terrence Malick's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows Franz Jägerstätter, the Austrian farmer who refused to swear loyalty to Hitler.

August Diehl plays Franz, living with his wife Fani and their daughters in the mountain hamlet of Radegund — fields to work, a church, the quiet of the high Alpine meadows. When he is called up and ordered to pledge himself to the Führer, he simply says no. No speeches, no heroics, just a man who cannot do otherwise. He is jailed, tried, and put to death in 1943. Much of the film sits not at the front but in the long years of pressure: neighbors turn cold, priests urge him to relent, and Fani holds the farm together alone, writing letters to her husband.

Malick works with almost no conventional plot here — sweeping wide-angle landscapes, whispered voiceover, the couple's correspondence in place of dialogue. The cast includes Bruno Ganz and Michael Nyqvist in some of their final roles. It's nearly three hours of slow, contemplative cinema about the cost of conscience — best for viewers ready for a poetic, unhurried rhythm rather than wartime action.
