About

Synopsis

Joe (2014) is David Gordon Green's grim Southern drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Nicolas Cage plays an ex-convict running a tree-poisoning crew in backwater Mississippi, doing his level best to stay clear of trouble.

A fifteen-year-old named Gary, played by Tye Sheridan, latches onto him — the oldest kid in a destitute family ruled by a drunk father who'll beat and rob his own son without blinking. Joe hands the boy a job, and a fragile father-and-son bond grows between two people who never really had one. But Joe's record hasn't gone anywhere: his short fuse and a vengeful local lowlife keep dragging him back toward the violence he's trying to leave behind.

Green adapted the film from Larry Brown's novel, soaking every frame in the sweat and rot of the American South. Cage plays it coiled and quiet rather than over the top, delivering one of his strongest turns in years, with Sheridan matching him scene for scene. A hard, honest film that refuses an easy ending.
