U Turn

U Turn (1997) is Oliver Stone's desert noir with Sean Penn, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Small-time gambler Bobby Cooper is racing across Arizona to outrun the bookies he owes when his Mustang's radiator blows. The repair strands him in Superior — a town that doesn't let people leave easily.

While the mechanic drags out the job, Bobby crosses paths with Grace (Jennifer Lopez) and her husband Jake (Nick Nolte). First the wife asks him to kill the husband. Then the husband asks him to kill the wife. Both have money, both have a story, and Bobby is running low on cash and luck alike. Every attempt to get out of town pulls him deeper into their poison.

Stone shoots it deliberately grimy and jittery — slashing cuts, bleached film stock, heat that fries the brain. Billy Bob Thornton, Joaquin Phoenix and Jon Voight turn up in odd little roles.
