About

Synopsis

Salvador (1986) is a war drama directed by Oliver Stone — watch it online on iFILM. Photojournalist Richard Boyle has lost his job, his wife, and most of his dignity. He talks his buddy Doctor Rock into driving south to El Salvador, expecting cheap thrills. What they find is a country tearing itself apart.

It is 1980. Right-wing death squads patrol the roads, guerrilla fighters hold the countryside, and US military advisers hover in the background. James Woods plays Boyle as a man half-consumed by chaos, still sharp enough to photograph the truth — and desperate enough to risk everything to get his girlfriend and her kids out. James Belushi is Doctor Rock, who came for a party and ended up in a firefight.

Stone made this film on a shoestring before Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, working from Boyle's own reporting. It remains one of the decade's bluntest political statements on American foreign policy in Latin America. Woods earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance.
