Synopsis
Last Flag Flying (2017) is Richard Linklater's road-trip drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Three Vietnam veterans regroup three decades later for a grim errand: burying one man's son.
Former Navy corpsman Doc, played by Steve Carell, learns his son has been killed in Iraq. He tracks down two old service buddies — Sal, a hard-drinking bar owner (Bryan Cranston), and Richard, now a soft-spoken preacher (Laurence Fishburne). Rather than accept a military funeral at Arlington, the trio loads the casket into a rental and drives it up the coast to New Hampshire. The miles turn into a long argument about war, faith and what soldiers actually die for.
Linklater built this as an unofficial sequel to Hal Ashby's The Last Detail, adapting Darryl Ponicsan's novel. It's a quiet film where the men talk, drink and sit in silence far more than they fight, and the chemistry between Carell, Cranston and Fishburne carries every scene. One for fans of conversation-driven road movies with a bitter streak of humor. Stream Last Flag Flying (2017) online on iFILM.
