Synopsis
We Were Soldiers (2002) — watch online on iFILM. Director Randall Wallace adapted the memoir by Lt. Col. Harold Moore and journalist Joe Galloway into a combat drama built on first-hand accounts. Mel Gibson plays Moore, who leads 395 air cavalry troops into the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965, outnumbered almost ten to one by North Vietnamese forces from the start.
Four days of close-range fighting with ammunition running short. Moore's pledge to his men before the drop — first one off the helicopter, last one on — becomes the film's moral backbone. Barry Pepper plays combat photographer Joe Galloway, whose images reached front pages worldwide. Back in the United States, the wives wait: Madeleine Stowe's Julia Moore ends up delivering death telegrams to neighbors herself, because no one else will.
Sam Elliott, Greg Kinnear, and Chris Klein round out an ensemble grounded in documented fact rather than scripted heroism. The film hit theatres in 2002, one year after September 11, and audiences found it stripped of the usual victorious finale — just soldiers doing their job in a valley they called the Valley of Death.
