Synopsis
Nouvelle Vague (2025) is Richard Linklater's historical comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. The film drops into Paris in 1959 as a young Jean-Luc Godard (Guillaume Marbeck) finally decides to shoot his first feature. Producer Georges de Beauregard hands over a modest budget, Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin) agrees to play a small-time crook on the run, and American actress Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch) signs on as his unreliable girlfriend.
The whole Left Bank crowd fills the frame. François Truffaut (Adrien Rouyard) has just come back from Cannes buzzing with momentum, Claude Chabrol already has two films under his belt, and cinematographer Raoul Coutard shoots handheld on actual Parisian streets. Linklater reconstructs how Breathless was made: no real script, no studio floor, real pedestrians walking through the shot. Tom Novembre appears as Jean-Pierre Melville. The production budget ran to roughly $10 million.
Linklater treats the whole thing as a question about what it means to make a film when the rules haven't been written yet. Stream Nouvelle Vague (2025) online on iFILM.
