Repo Man

Repo Man (1984) is Alex Cox's sci-fi comedy, free to watch online on iFILM. Cox's first feature turned into a love letter to the Los Angeles punk scene and one of the defining cult films of the decade.

Otto (Emilio Estevez) is a broke, bad-tempered kid who just got fired from a grocery store. He stumbles into a job alongside Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a grizzled repossession agent who yanks cars back from people who stopped paying their loans. The work pays per car, the customers shoot back, and nobody sticks around long. Meanwhile a beat-up '64 Chevy Malibu is rolling through the city with something radioactive in the trunk — pop it open and you burn to ash. A fried nuclear physicist is at the wheel, the feds are circling, and the whole repo crew gets sucked into chasing the most dangerous car in LA.

Cox built a sour, very funny satire of consumerism and Reagan-era America, wired together with punk rock — the soundtrack pulls in Iggy Pop, Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies. It barely made a dent in theaters, then found its crowd on video and at midnight screenings. Perfect for anyone who likes their cinema cheap, strange and a lot smarter than it lets on.
