Synopsis
Fréwaka (Fréamhacha, 2025) is Aislinn Clarke's Irish folk horror, available to watch online on iFILM. Still reeling from the suicide of a mother she hadn't spoken to in years, care worker Shoo takes a job far from the city — looking after an elderly woman in an isolated house beyond the village.
The old woman barely steps outside. She dreads her neighbours and keeps muttering about "them" — the Na Sídhe, figures out of Irish folklore she swears carried her off decades ago. Shoo is told to follow a string of odd rituals, and at first it all reads like an old woman's quirks. The longer she stays, though, the less it looks like dementia and the more it feels like those rules are holding something real at bay.
Shot in the Irish language, Clarke's film works through slow-thickening dread and unshakeable grief rather than jump scares. It's a quiet, ritualistic kind of horror, rooted in soil and old belief — ideal if you like your scares patient. Stream Fréwaka (2025) online on iFILM.
