Synopsis
The Witch (2016) is Robert Eggers' folk horror you can watch online on iFILM. His debut feature pulls dread straight out of Puritan New England in the year 1630.
Banished from their plantation, a devout family builds a farm at the edge of a vast wood. Prayer, hard labor, a failing crop. Then the baby vanishes during a game of peekaboo, snatched away while the eldest daughter Thomasin looks after him. Suspicion creeps through the household like rot. William cannot feed his children, Katherine unravels with grief, and the younger twins keep whispering to a black goat named Black Phillip. Anya Taylor-Joy, in her breakout role, plays the girl accused of witchcraft.
Eggers rebuilt 17th-century speech and daily life from real diaries and trial records, while cinematographer Jarin Blaschke shot by candlelight and natural daylight alone. The film earned a directing prize at Sundance and made period horror fashionable again. Stream The Witch (2016) online on iFILM.
