Symbol (しんぼる, 2009) — watch online on iFILM. Japanese director and comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto builds his absurdist feature around a man in polka-dot yellow pajamas who wakes up in a perfectly white room: no doors, no windows, no hint of how he got there.

Intercut with that locked-room puzzle is a thread set in a dusty Mexican town, where a middle-aged luchador is preparing for the match that might define his career. The two storylines appear to have nothing in common. That gap is the whole joke — and the whole philosophy. Symbol is the kind of film that earns its reputation quietly, from viewer to viewer.
