Synopsis
White Sun of the Desert (1969) is a Soviet action-adventure you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Vladimir Motyl and starring Anatoly Kuznetsov as Red Army soldier Fyodor Sukhov. The setting: the eastern Caspian coast during the Civil War, all desert heat and flat silence.
Sukhov is days away from home when a Red Army commander drops nine women in veils into his care — the abandoned harem of a Basmachi warlord named Abdullah (Kakhi Kavsadze). He gets one green recruit, Petrukha, for backup, while Abdullah himself is circling back to reclaim what's his. Meanwhile a retired customs officer named Vereshchagin — played by Pavel Luspekaev — watches the port and keeps his own counsel.
Shot at Mosfilm, the film became something rarer than a hit: a fixed point in Soviet culture. The line "Customs okays it" entered everyday Russian speech. It works as a Western, as a comedy, as a melancholy ballad about a man who just wants to go home — all three at once. Stream White Sun of the Desert online on iFILM.
