Officers

Officers (1971) is a Soviet military drama you can watch online on iFILM — director Vladimir Rogovoy's portrait of two men whose friendship spans half a century of turbulent 20th-century history.

Alexei Trofimov and Ivan Varavva meet as young soldiers on a Central Asian border post in the early 1920s. Their commanding officer leaves them with a phrase that will carry both of them through decades: "There is such a profession — to defend the homeland." The years ahead send them in different directions — Spain, Finland, the Eastern Front — and the gaps between their meetings stretch longer each time. Trofimov's wife Lyubochka waits through all of it, one posting at a time.

Georgy Yumatov, Vasily Lanovoy and Alina Pokrovskaya carry the film's long arc without letting it sag. Rogovoy was less concerned with the battles than with the weight of a life given entirely to service — and with the families who bore that weight alongside them.
