Synopsis
Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) is a classic black-and-white Universal horror you can watch online on iFILM. Set in 19th-century Paris, it stars Bela Lugosi as the sinister Dr. Mirakle, a carnival showman obsessed with proving a blood link between humans and apes.
The film loosely reworks Edgar Allan Poe's tale. At his sideshow Mirakle exhibits Erik, a "talking" gorilla, but the act hides a far darker fixation. Among the crowd are young Camille L'Espanaye and her fiancé Pierre Dupin, who begins to suspect that the smooth-talking doctor is behind a string of women vanishing across the city. Director Robert Florey shoots it in a German Expressionist key, all jagged shadows and warped sets, with Sidney Fox and Leon Ames alongside Lugosi.
This is one of the early pillars of Universal's horror golden age, a neighbor to Dracula and Frankenstein. It runs barely an hour yet drips with atmosphere, a real find for fans of vintage gothic cinema and Lugosi at his most quietly menacing. Stream Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) online on iFILM.
