Synopsis
The Icebreaker (Ледокол, 2016) is a Russian disaster drama you can watch online on iFILM. It's the winter of 1985 off the Antarctic coast: swerving to miss a vast iceberg, the crew of the icebreaker Mikhail Gromov ends up locked solid in the pack ice.
What follows is 133 days adrift through the polar night. Fuel runs low, radio contact frays, and the hull groans as the ice presses in. On the bridge sit two captains at odds — the worn-out Sevchenko, played by Sergei Puskepalis, and the hard-edged replacement Petrov, played by Pyotr Fyodorov. Two dozen men sealed in a steel box in the middle of white nothing; some crack, some hold the rest together. Anna Mikhalkova, Aleksandr Pal and Aleksandr Yatsenko give the crew flawed, human faces.
Director Nikolai Khomeriki loosely based the film on the true ordeal of the icebreaker Mikhail Somov, trapped in the ice in 1985, and leans into the cramped quarters, the boredom and the slow dread rather than heroics. If you want people-versus-nature survival told without speeches, there's plenty here. Stream The Icebreaker (2016) online on iFILM.
