Paleoclimatologist Jack Hall tells a UN climate conference that melting polar ice will shut down the ocean's thermohaline circulation — triggering a catastrophic new ice age within days, not centuries. Nobody listens. Then tornadoes tear through Los Angeles, a wall of ocean water buries Manhattan and freezes solid on the spot, and Jack's son Sam is stranded inside the New York Public Library with a dwindling group of survivors. Jack grabs a pack and sets off on foot through the blizzard to reach him.
