Synopsis
The Ninth (Девятая, 2019) is a Russian occult mystery you can watch online on iFILM. Late-19th-century St. Petersburg is gripped by a craze for séances and spirits. Then young women start vanishing, their bodies turning up across the city.
Police officer Rostov, played by Yevgeny Tsyganov, catches the case and gets nowhere. Every new victim tangles the threads tighter. His one lead points to Olivia Reed (Daisy Head), a British medium drawing packed halls to her public sittings in the imperial capital. Rostov approaches her with zero faith in ghosts — he simply has nothing else left. The trouble starts when he can no longer tell the staged from the real.
Director Nikolai Khomeriki builds a foggy period gothic of gaslight and ritual dread, a horror-tinged register Russian cinema rarely attempts. If you like a detective story with an occult underside and a stomach for blood, this one delivers. Stream The Ninth (2019) online on iFILM.
