Synopsis
Memento (2000) is Christopher Nolan's breakthrough mystery thriller — watch it online on iFILM. Shot on a budget of nine million dollars, the film tells its story in reverse chronological order, so the audience is always as disoriented as the man at the centre of it.
Leonard Shelby — played by Guy Pearce — is hunting the man who attacked his wife. He has a rare condition: no short-term memory. What happened fifteen minutes ago is already gone. He navigates each day through Polaroid photos, handwritten notes, and tattoos covering his own skin. Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) claim to be helping him. Whether that's true is exactly what the film won't tell you straight.
Nolan and his brother Jonathan wrote the screenplay from Jonathan's short story "Memento Mori," constructing a puzzle where each scene simultaneously answers a question and poisons an earlier assumption. The film went from a limited 2000 release to a fixture on best-of-genre lists and a touchstone for anyone who wants to understand how narrative structure can do the work of suspense.
