Synopsis

Perfect Obedience (Obediencia Perfecta, 2014) is a Mexican drama you can watch online on iFILM — director Luis Urquiza's account of a scandal that ran unchecked inside the Catholic Church for decades.

Thirteen-year-old Julián arrives from his rural family at a seminary where Father Ángel de la Cruz marks him out as a special disciple, renames him "Sacramento Santos," installs him in private quarters, and begins teaching the cardinal rule: never question your superior. Juan Manuel Bernal and Alfonso Herrera lead a cast that holds this portrait of institutional abuse at a deliberately quiet pitch — no outrage, just cold observation.

The fictional Father Ángel maps onto Marcial Maciel, the Legion of Christ founder whose crimes went unaddressed for fifty-plus years and were only officially acknowledged in 2009. Urquiza chooses the perspective of a child who doesn't yet have the language for what is being done to him — which is precisely what makes the film so hard to shake.
