Her nine-year-old sister Kate dreams of swimming medals and practices in the bathtub. Meanwhile their mother starts falling for the gentle owner of the local shoe store. Cher plays the impossible mom, Winona Ryder the worn-out daughter, with Bob Hoskins alongside them and a very young Christina Ricci in her screen debut.

Director Richard Benjamin keeps the tone poised between laughter and tears: under the loud outfits and one-liners sits an honest story about a mother and daughter who love each other and have no idea how to show it.
