El Cantante

El Cantante (2006) is Leon Ichaso's music drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. It follows Héctor Lavoe, the voice that moved every salsa floor in 1970s New York, told through his widow Puchi as she looks back on a life that burned fast and ended young.

A teenager from Ponce lands in a cold, loud city and within a few years becomes the beating heart of New York salsa. The stage, the tours, the adoring crowds — and underneath it all the heroin, the grief, the illness that wrecks both the voice and the man. Marc Anthony plays Lavoe and does his own singing on screen, while Jennifer Lopez plays Puchi; the two were married off-screen at the time, which gives their scenes a strange charge. Rather than march through the dates, the film leaps around in time the way a solo improvises.
