Synopsis
The Magician (Hokkabaz, 2006) is a Turkish tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM, with Cem Yılmaz both directing and headlining.
Iskender is a magician short on talent and shorter on audience. To rescue his fading act, he pulls together a ragtag crew and hits the road through small-town Turkey, dragging his cranky, slowly forgetting father along for the ride. The tour is a string of flopped shows, petty squabbles and the odd moment of genuine warmth. Then, at a wedding gig, their signature "magic box" routine goes badly wrong — the bride vanishes for real.
Beneath the comedy, Yılmaz tucks a quiet drama about fathers, sons and stubborn faith in your own craft. The humor is softer and more human here than in his sci-fi spoofs, and the ending sneaks up on you. A good fit if you like road movies with a melancholy streak, in the spirit of Little Miss Sunshine.
