Synopsis
Benny & Joon (1993) is a tender romantic comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Jeremiah Chechik directs Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson and Aidan Quinn in a story about love and the limits of looking after the people we love.
Benny is a small-town mechanic who has spent years caring for his sister Joon, whose schizophrenia and habit of setting things on fire keep him on edge. Their fragile routine cracks open when Sam walks in — an odd young man who imitates Buster Keaton's silent comedy, juggling, scaling walls, ironing bread with a hot iron. Joon laughs again, then falls for him. Benny panics: he has built his life around keeping his sister safe, and now control is slipping.
Depp plays Sam almost wordlessly, all physical comedy, an early-90s role that cemented his offbeat screen persona. Chechik keeps the tone light without dodging the hard questions about independence and care, and the soundtrack — built around The Proclaimers — became a radio staple.
