Synopsis
Marshland (La isla mínima, 2014) is Alberto Rodríguez's Spanish crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's the summer of 1980, deep in the Guadalquivir wetlands of southern Spain, where two homicide detectives from Madrid have been sent as punishment.
Juan and Pedro are partners by force, not choice. One is older, carrying a murky past tied to the Franco dictatorship; the other is younger and still believes the law should be clean. Together they look into two teenage sisters who vanished during a local festival. The deeper they dig, the clearer it becomes that the silence over these rice fields and broken-down villages hides a whole network of abuse the region would rather ignore. The dread here comes less from any chase than from the place itself — heat, mud, and flocks of birds shot from above like abstract patterns across the water.
The film swept the Goya Awards with ten wins, among them best director and a best-actor prize for Javier Gutiérrez. If you're drawn to True Detective and Southern-style noir, its grim tone and slow burn will sit just right. Stream Marshland (2014) online on iFILM.
